May 2025

FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Dear SBE members,

I first want to say that the SBE has an extraordinary group of volunteers on the board and beyond making the Society for Business Ethics more amazing every year.  Our Copenhagen meeting will be the largest we have had for quite some time, and Miguel Alzola has done a masterful job putting together a fantastic program.  SBE President Tae Wan Kim has helped raise a significant amount of money from a variety of generous contributors affiliated with SBE, and this has helped tremendously in our efforts to get people to the conference and in our conversations who otherwise could not have come.  Our DEI efforts to draw more international representation and the ongoing and expanding Emerging Scholar program led by the all-able Florian Krause.  I also want to especially thank Oluwatobi ("Tobi") Ogunmokun, who has done a first rate job of directing our social media efforts.  Having such highly effective people throughout the organization is what makes the SBE so effective.

I  also want to say that the board is aware of the concerns of our many international members with regard to future travel to the U.S. and we remain fully committed to academic freedom and high-quality scholarly exchange among all of our members.   We will seek to overcome any obstacles which undermine that freedom and may affect our members’ ability to perform their research and thus impact their careers.  This of course includes our commitment to hybrid conferencing to include those who cannot attend for political, health, or financial reasons.  We continue to support our DEIC’s efforts to represent and grow our community and we believe our field is uniquely positioned to address some of today’s political challenges because we know that ethical business practice has the potential to support positive social change.  We plan to have time for a discussion of these matters and their impact on our international members at the SBE business meeting.

As of this morning, over 150 people have already registered for the conference, and we expect that number to potentially double or more. If you haven’t registered yet, please do so today—and don’t miss out on the early bird registration discount, which closes on 25th May. Be sure to book your room soon as well. Hotel rooms have been, as I have warned since January, disappearing.

Thank you to everyone who has contributed to the conference this year, whether with papers, volunteer work, or other participation in the organization.  I look forward to seeing you in Copenhagen!

SBE CONFERENCE

2025 Annual Meeting: 24-27 July • Copenhagen

NOTE FROM THE 2025 CONFERENCE CHAIR

Dear Friends,

The draft program for SBE 2025 is ready. And it looks fantastic (if I may say so myself :)

First, a huge thanks to those who submitted their high-quality work.

A special shout-out to the 324 amazing colleagues who reviewed submissions; you are the superheroes behind the scenes. Extra gratitude goes to our “emergency reviewers” who stepped in during crunch time to help us make final decisions.

For those whose submissions could not be included, please accept my sincere apologies; this year’s competition was tougher than ever (32% more submissions than SBE’s previous record last year!).

You will notice some exciting changes in this year’s program. It’s bigger, bolder, and—yes—busier!

We have more sessions, which means more outstanding content, but also more opportunity costs, since some great talks will overlap. Of course, what better place to face painful trade-offs than a business ethics conference? Think of it as live-action ethics training!

Countless hours were invested in carefully grouping papers by theme, hoping to create engaging sessions that serve both presenters and audiences (if you do not like your session, pretend you do—at least until after the conference!)

By now, you are probably registered for the SBE 2025. If not, hurry up! Early bird registration fees expire next week.

Please take a moment to review the draft program to locate your session. The program heads into production in two weeks, so changes will not be possible after that point.

There are 43 sessions that still need a session chair. To volunteer as chair, please email me at programchair@sbeonline.org with the subject formatted as: your name, affiliation, and preferred session code. For example: “Adam Smith (University of Glasgow), 2D: Corporate Ethics and Governance.” I will give priority to colleagues not already listed in the program.

Thank you again for your love and dedication to SBE. We can not wait to see you in Copenhagen for what promises to be our biggest conference yet!

With best wishes,

Your Program Chair

Junior Scholars Network

We are pleased to announce the new organising committee for the SBE Junior Scholar Network (JSN). Following an excellent term of coordination, Chiara Andreoli, Miguel Velasco López, and Oluwatobi Ogunmokun have now handed over their roles.

Under their guidance, the JSN continued to provide a dynamic platform for early-career researchers to connect, collaborate, and contribute to the field of business ethics. We extend our sincere thanks to them for their dedication and the successful facilitation of the committee handover. Stepping into the role are Yifan Wang, Alif Laila Tisha, and Lucas Taufer, who bring fresh energy and ideas to continue building on this strong foundation.

To learn more about the JSN and upcoming activities, visit the JSN webpage.

SBE DEI Award

We are still accepting nominations for the SBE DEI Award 2025. Deadline 5th June!

The Annual DEI Award honors and celebrates individuals who have made significant contributions to advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion. These contributions may take place within SBE, in the nominee’s local community, or in the broader field of business ethics — and can be of any scale. If you have questions, please contact Florian Krause: Florian.Krause@unisg.ch

SBE Car(e)er Initiative

Are you an academic with caring responsibilities? Our survey is still open! Please click here to contribute!

The goal of the initiative is to find the appropriate strategies to support our colleagues with caring responsibilities, so that they can be active members of SBE even in the middle of the years of their careers when their caring responsibilities require a lot of their time and presence, in addition to the time and energies already required at work. If you have questions, please contact Marta Rocchi: marta.rocchi@dcu.ie

Mentorship programme - Icons of Business Ethics and junior scholars

The DEIC just launched a mentorship programme that pairs Icons of Business Ethics with junior scholars in the field. As part of this programme, mentees will receive professional advice and feedback on their work. The DEIC is very grateful to Joanne Ciulla, Cedric Dawkins, Robbin Derry, Vanessa Hill, and Geoff Moore for so generously dedicating their time to this initiative and supporting the development of the next generation of business ethicists. For more information contact Marta Rocchi at marta.rocchi@dcu.ie
