Position Announcement: SBE Treasurer

The Society for Business Ethics is seeking a volunteer Treasurer, for a five-year term in office beginning in August of 2022 and ending in August of 2027.

The Treasurer is the steward of the financial resources of the Society. That responsibility includes but is not limited to the following:

  • Keep full and correct account of receipts and disbursements in the books belonging to the Society, in such banks of deposit as may be designated by the Board of Directors
  • Dispose of funds of the Society as may be ordered by the Board of Directors, taking proper vouchers for such disbursements
  • Prepare and submit invoices as necessary to receive disbursements due to the Society
  • Receive and deposit disbursements due to the Society in a timely manner
  • Receive, deposit, record, and receipt charitable donations to the Society in a timely manner, andin accordance with all relevant regulations
  • Render to the Board of Directors, upon request, an account of all transactions and of the financialcondition of the Society
  • Report to the Board of Directors all matters within their knowledge which the interest of theSociety may require to be brought to its notice
  • Advise the Board of Directors and the Executive Director on matters pertaining to governance,controls, and tax-exempt status, consulting as necessary with the Society’s public accountants
  • Report on the financial state of the Society to the membership at the Annual Meeting
  • Produce all information required for Federal, state, and local non-profit tax returns and other filings, and work as needed with the Society’s public accountants to submit such filings in a timely manner as required by law
  • Serve ex officio as a non-voting member of the Board of Directors
  • Perform such other duties as may be assigned to them from time to time by the Board of Directors

Candidates for Treasurer are expected to have the following attributes:

  • A university degree
  • Familiarity with the Society for Business Ethics
  • Demonstrated attention to detail in prior work
  • Fluency in written and spoken English
  • Availability to attend SBE Board of Directors meetings, including the annual meeting typically held the day of pre-conference activities at the conference hotel
  • Availability to attend the SBE annual conference, typically held over three days at the end of July or the beginning of August in a North American or European city
  • Ability to work independently, cordially, and remotely with a variety of diverse stakeholders

Preferred qualifications include:

    • Knowledge of accounting
    • Experience in a leadership role of a non-profit corporation

The Treasurer would assume office at the end of the business meeting at the 2022 conference, and relinquish office at the end of the business meeting at the 2027 conference, unless their term is extended as provided in the bylaws of the Society. The Board hopes to select the incoming Treasurer by the beginning of January, 2022, and begin including the incoming Treasurer on correspondence and in deliberations shortly thereafter, so that the incoming Treasurer can be familiar with the Society’s policies, processes, and vendors before taking office.
